Scientists have long concluded that grape culture is possible throughout Ukraine. Currently, scientists from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences have managed to grow varieties for the northern region of the country.
However, attempts to grow varieties imported from the south, mainly of European origin, in the north of the country have always been unsuccessful due to the freezing of plants in severe snowless winters, due to the fact that the vineyards were not taken into account either the agroclimatic conditions in the north of Ukraine or the biological characteristics of the southern grape varieties.
Today, scientists from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences have developed their own technology for growing root-bearing planting material for grapes. It is one of the main components of the success of grape culture in the northern regions of Ukraine.Scientists have carried out work on selection and variety testing and have developed agrotechnical methods that correspond to the climatic conditions of the northern region.
Breeding work was aimed at creating frost-resistant, high-yielding and high-quality, resistant to early fungal diseases. Currently, there are a number of varieties with the characteristics necessary for the region.
In order for the introduction of grape growing in the north of Ukraine to be successful, three important conditions must be observed:- proper selection of varieties;
- the use of high-quality rooting planting material;
- planting care in accordance with the harsh natural conditions of the north of Ukraine for the vine.
For the cultivation of grapes in the northern regions, soils of light mechanical composition with a high content of nutrients are most preferred. They warm up quickly and provide early ripening of grapes.
