According to NABU, the growing intensification of agriculture, chemical crop protection, an excess of fertilizers, the loss of landscape elements, the narrowing of crop rotation, etc. are the causes of death of birds.
In view of the continuing downward trend in the number of field and meadow birds, NABU requires a more environmentally sound agricultural policy of the EU.
For example, the number of endangered species is expected to increase from 55% to 68%. German Federal Minister for the Environment Svenja Schulze added: “Unfortunately, the dramatic downward trend in the number of birds in the field has not yet been stopped.
Significantly more effort will be required to effectively protect endangered birds from our agricultural landscapes.
It will be successful only if we finally use the significant financial resources of the EU agricultural subsidy in the sense of changing directions to better protect nature, environment and climate in our agricultural landscapes. ”
Ornithologists advocate the further development of the Common Agricultural Policy since 2021, with significantly less use of pesticides and fertilizers, the promotion of organic farming and structurally rich landscapes with hedges, dirt roads, steam and more permanent pastures.
Experts believe that the ongoing intensification of agriculture is the main reason for the decrease in the number of birds.
In particular, this is due to chemical protection of crops, intensive soil fertilization, loss of landscape elements such as field crops, narrow crop rotation, for example, due to increased production of corn for biogas plants, loss of ecologically valuable permanent pasture land.
