A decrease in consumer demand and a change in the diet of Americans towards vegan food back in 2017 forced the director general of the dairy factory Henry Schwartz to change his family business, change the name of the factory and switch to the production of plant-based drinks.
Currently, the exclusively dairy-free company Elmhurst 1925 has begun production of hemp cream made from the seeds of the cannabis plant.
The new “hemp” drink contains only a small amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and, therefore, will not give consumers a “high psychotropic effect”, which is usually associated with cannabis. Now most American manufacturers of “hemp drinks” guarantee that the raw materials used at their enterprises do not contain tetrahydrocannabinol, but sometimes plants with 0.3% THC content are still used as raw materials.
In addition to hemp cream, Elmhurst 1925 offers a wide range of nut-based drinks, including cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and peanuts. In addition, the company offers drinks based on oats and brown rice.
In the US market, there is a tendency to increase the share of cannabis-based foods and drinks in the total volume of plant products.
