In India, the area of rice cultivation for the sake of other crops has been significantly reduced compared to 2018.
Appreciating the efforts of the Department of Agriculture, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who also owns a portfolio of agricultural products, said that this initiative will be of great importance for saving water, as rice fields consume a large amount of it.
The chief minister said the government intends to shift its focus from rice fields to crops such as cotton, corn, basmati, fruits and vegetables to restore water balance in the state.
This year, the Ministry of Agriculture has already transferred 7.5 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 ha) from rice fields to growing other crops. In particular, about 3 acres of land was under cotton, 1.27 acres under corn, 2.95 acres under basmati and 17.5 thousand acres under fruits and vegetables, he said in a statement.
In the world there are more than 7 thousand varieties of rice.
Direct speech: “In addition to crop diversification, the department also launched an active campaign to motivate farmers to reduce the use of agrochemicals, especially nine agrochemicals that adversely affect the quality of basmati grain,” said Vishwajit Hannah, additional secretary (for development).
He added that this brought encouraging results, since the level of chemical residues in the Basmati culture was below the minimum residue level (MRL).
Direct speech: “Following this initiative, state farmers produced a high-quality Basmati culture and received favorable prices for their products, despite weak international sentiment due to restrictions on exports to Iran, which is the main market for Punjabi Basmati,” Hannah said in a statement .
