Many owners of cottages and suburban areas are faced with the appearance of bald spots on a personal lawn. These dry or “bare” spots stand out sharply on a flat green lawn and spoil its appearance. Further in the article, the causes of this problem will be considered, and how to rationally sow the lawn into bald spots.
Why are bald spots formed on the lawn
If small “inanimate” areas appeared on the grass, this signals a high probability of further death of the entire grass cover.
Important! Watering the site on hot noon causes a “lens effect” when drops of water, accumulating the sun's rays, damage the unstable stems.
Lawn grass problems can be caused by the following reasons:
- improper feeding - if fertilizers were applied less often 3-4 times per season. Or there was an oversupply of fertilizers, especially mineral ones (N and Fe). As a result of "overfeeding," the plants get burned;
- lack of moisture. Irregular or untimely watering can lead to partial death of the grass and the need for its seeding. Therefore, regular irrigation of the site in the morning or evening hours is required;
- excess humidity. Long rainy periods can lead to decay of plants and deterioration of the lawn;
- plant diseases. Some diseases of the grass cause it to dry out and deteriorate in appearance. So, in the autumn period, red filament may occur, leading to yellowing of the grass and the appearance of pink veins. Prevention of this disease - the absence of excess moisture and timely top dressing with nitrogen-containing fertilizers;
- low mowing. The lawnmower must be set up correctly so that it does not leave an extremely low cover. Otherwise, in attempts to recover, the plants turn yellow;
- poor aeration. Periodically, the turf should be pierced with special equipment for aeration or simple improvised means, for example, with a fork;
- Pets. Quite often, in the area with an excess of nitrogen, bald spots appear due to the urine of animals. In this case, a chemical reaction occurs, which leads to burnout of the grass and the appearance of a stain. You can try to strengthen the watering of the “affected” sites, and change the place of walking your pets;
- incorrect planting or poor-quality seeds. When planting a lawn, you must strictly adhere to the instructions, and check the expiration date of the seed. The average number of seeds per 1 m² is 40 g;
- other reasons. For example, the need to sow the lawn can cause exposure to gasoline or engine oil. As well as the introduction of construction waste during the development of a plot under the lawn.
If bald spots appear on the lawn, you can try to save the situation by regular watering and mowing. If the problem persists, plant grass on the affected areas.
Did you know? A roll-up lawn with an area of only 2 m² produces enough oxygen to support the life of 4 people.
What to do when bald spots form on the lawn
If spots have appeared on the site, it is necessary to sow grass mixture in problem areas or lay a new ready-made lawn.

Seeding
Step-by-step instructions for planting grass.
- Remove all plant residues on bald spots, loosen the soil and level.
- Fluff the plot with a rake to a depth of 2 cm.
- Prepare a mixture of fertile land and seeds in a ratio of 2: 1 and evenly plant in bald spots.
- Seat the landing site with the back surface of the rake and cover it with a layer of mulch (compost or humus) 1 cm thick.
- Abundantly water and irrigate daily for 2 weeks after planting.
To plant as smoothly as possible, the seed rate for bald spots should be reduced by about 2 times (about 25 g per 1 m²). Otherwise, the updated areas will be distinguished by a thick brush of grass against the background of the rest of the lawn.

Selection of grass mixtures
Experts recommend planting the same grass mixture that was used for the initial planting of the lawn. Exceptions may be cases if only those areas that are in the shade are affected. In this case, it is better to purchase seed resistant to a lack of sunlight.
If the original herb mixture could not be found, seed mixes of the most similar composition are planted. Now in specialized stores offer restorative lawn mixtures. Their advantage is the quick overgrowing of bald spots, and the disadvantage is the difference in the growth rate and shade of new plants.
Important! When choosing a grass mixture you need to consider the characteristics of a particular site. So, there are photophilous and shade-loving varieties of plants. As well as unpretentious varieties that are well accepted on any soil.
Therefore, it is worthwhile to be prepared that fresh grass will be noticeably different from the main site. You also need to consider the purpose of the lawn. If it is often walked on or used as a platform for games, then you should purchase special herbs for a sports lawn. Such plants are highly resistant to trampling.
Sowing Features
The best time for planting lawn grass is considered autumn or early spring. However, autumn sowing will be most effective. This is due to the fact that during this period weeds grow much more slowly and there are no too high temperatures. But at the same time, good humidity is maintained and in general the climate remains sufficiently acceptable for seed germination. Despite the name "autumn", sowing is carried out in the last days of summer or early autumn.
Did you know? Each 1 m² of green grass around the house can hold up to 6 kg of dust. This is especially important for the health of young children and people prone to allergies.
Then, for the time remaining before the frosts, the vegetation manages to well ascend and grow stronger. If you sow bald spots in the summer, then the sprouted sprouts can burn under the hot scorching sun. For this reason, they rarely resort to spring sowing, since the actual germination of seeds occurs in the hot season, which does not contribute to the development of strong plants. The exceptions are regions with cool summers or shaded areas. It is worth paying attention that it is forbidden to walk along the "repaired" places in autumn throughout the winter so as not to damage the young landing.
Laying the finished lawn
The easiest and quickest way to restore bald spots is to lay a new turf with grass growing on it. It can, for example, be carefully cut from the edge of the lawn. Or, if possible, purchase in a specialized store. It is important that the size of this piece coincides with the bald spot. If it is uneven, then you should give it the shape of a square or rectangle. After all, such a piece is cut and stacked much more convenient.
New turf is laid on loosened soil, and the joints are carefully sprinkled with earthth. The received "patch" is watered daily until complete engraftment. Now you know why bald spots appear on the lawn and what you need to do with it. It is important to make “repairs” on time and to take good care of the lawn. Then it will quickly acquire a decorative look, and will delight for a long time with its green and juicy carpet.
