The Cashew Federation of India, in a letter to the Center, reports that about 15,000 tons of cashew kernels got stuck in factories throughout India at different stages of processing because of quarantine. The federation noted that although food processing has been declared an important service, many state governments have not given permission to work in cashew production.
The delay in permitting various state governments to operate processing plants led to the accumulation of cashew nuts at various stages of production across the country, resulting in huge losses for industry.
Cashew is the only nut in the world that ripens outside the fruit, not inside.
“The kernels are very perishable and will disappear due to delay. There is also the possibility of infection, if not maintained properly. We are ready to introduce norms of social distance and disinfection during the work of units ”Said RK Bhudes, former chairman of the Cashew Export Promotion Council in India (CEPCI).
India loses to its competitors, such as Vietnam, as a result of a breakdown. “It will be difficult to get the market back when we lose it to our competitors”, - he said.
CEPCI has already sent a letter to the government of Kerala asking them to allow processing plants to resume work, citing the fact that Tamil Nadu has allowed his plants to operate. Units in Kerala are already facing closures and bad debts. Only about 150 units work out of 800 at the cashew center in Kollam.
“We asked the Prime Minister to allow a one-year moratorium on bank loans for industries that fall into the NPA category.”“Said K. Rajesh, organizer of the Cashew Industry Protection Council. The Indian cashew industry meets more than half of its raw nut requirements for processing from West African countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria, where the harvest season begins.
